The 0 and 6 start by the Red Sox or the price of gas?

In this instance - baseball is irrelevant. With gasoline headed over $4/gallon, the price of all commodities will go up... notice the difference already at the supermarket. No one can afford to go the ballgame anyway.

Go Mets...

Good but the tied game between England and India was the best match of the tournament.

I'm not concerned about fuel prices as I don't have a car, and as for the Red Sox - wasn't there an early 'reality TV show' about one of their ex-players who ran a bar ?

The price of oil will affect you even if you don't have a car. If you eat food, which I assume you do, then the price of oil directly influences the price of food. The connections between the two being production costs, transport costs, storage costs (cooling), etc....

Just sayin'... it's about time to plant seeds!

Well, I didn't actually watch it or anything :-) But my husband did. There were a bunch of people here, all riveted on cricket. My contribution consisted of disputing their contention that cricket is now getting more popular in the States. (Yeah, right. In your dreams. There is insufficient steroid use for it to be of interest to Americans.) However, if any of the forumites who are inexplicably addicted to watching men hit and toss balls in various ways tell me they watch cricket, and they're also American ... well, I'll eat my words. Maybe.

I watched a little bit of Sri Lanka's drubbing of England, however i was in London at the time and it was the thing to do. The only folks I know that watch cricket regularly in the States aren't Americans so i think you can snack on something other than your words.

Thanks for asking snori.

Did not do any sightseeing this time. Rob and I did get together on the Saturday afternoon of the England v. Sri Lanka match and got to about 4 pubs. I will post a picture when i have time to download it off my camera. However as you recall, that Saturday was the day of the big demonstration so we were limited to what parts of central London we could visit. I was staying near the British Museum which was a safe area so we didn't wander that many blocks away from that part of town. We did find ourselves on Oxford Street at one point and decided it was best to turn the other way as that was where the Top Shops store that was attacked by those well organized anarchists.

Good news is that a few days after i returned, i was invited to attend a conference in London in September, so I'll have another opportunity to hit the pubs and perhaps go to some places i haven't in the past. Looking forward to another visit. I do love the city.

Cricket actually is becoming more popular in the states.
By default, of course. The 3 people that are into it this week are 2 more than last week. LOL

There is a group in my area that plays at the local middle school. I've sat and watched a few times while my son is at baseball practice. I don't understand most of what is going on aside from whacking a ball with a paddle. no idea how score is kept or any of that.

I know it's increasing in at least visibility here at work. The 90% of our IT team who is from India will often spend lunch hours with a quick game in a park near our building. This has gotten some non-cricket folks to start asking questions and actually get a little interested. Stil, I don't see it growing too much more than that, but I could be wrong.

I'm afraid my brain is already overloaded with the intracacies and rules of our bat and ball game, I'm not sure I have any room left up there.

From an Australian blog:

It's all America's fault.

It is.

Dead set.

After the English gentlemen got their collection bottoms spanked, not to mention getting quite a few good quality serfs killed, by the American Subclass of Colonials (who for some reason no longer wanted to be colonials, but that's by the by), a collection of English Surviving Gentlemen got together to see if they could find a less expensive way of easing these sorts of tensions, especially as they now had to deal with the Australian Subclass of Colonials.

Cricket was the result.

By using this ritualised method of combat, these enlightened gentlemen achieved the following results -
- not as many good quality serfs died
- they (the English) could be flogged silly and it didn't matter
- they could flog the colonials silly and the beggars just came back for another serve, always a good thing provided you could do it again next time
- if they were lucky, they could make a lot of money out of it, though this was a minor consideration as lots of money could also be made in your average shooting type war ... provided you survived.

But they showed the true cunning of the English aristocracy.
They created a set of rules so obscure that the only sure way of telling when someone had failed to grasp a vital concept was to hear him say that he understood it perfectly.

And thus we have cricket today.

Cheers
Richard

And then there is Douglas Adams:

Brockian Ultra-Cricket

A curious game which involves suddenly hitting people for no readily apparent reason and then running away. "Let's be blunt, it's a nasty game," says The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

The rules are as follows:

Rule One: Grow at least three extra legs. You won’t need them, but it keeps the crowds amused.
Rule Two: Find one extremely good Brockian Ultra Cricket player. Clone him off a few times. This saves an enormous amount of tedious selection and training.
Rule Three: Put your team and the opposing team in a large field and build a high wall around them. The reason for this is that, though the game is a major spectator sport, the frustration experienced by the audience at not actually being able to see what’s going on leads them to imagine that it’s a lot more exciting than it really is. A crowd that has just watched a rather humdrum game experiences far less life affirmation than a crowd that believes it has just missed the most dramatic event in sporting history.
Rule Four: Throw lots of assorted items of sporting equipment over the wall for the players. Anything will do – cricket bats, basecube bats, tennis racquets, skis, anything you can get a good swing with.
Rule Five: The players should now lay about themselves for all they are worth with whatever they find to hand. Whenever a player scored a “hit” on another player, he should immediately run away as fast as he can and apologize from a safe distance. Apologies should be concise, sincere, and, for maximum clarity and points, delivered through a megaphone.
Rule Six: The winning team shall be the first team that wins.

It's much simpler than that. Take a deep breath and read aloud -
The Rules of Cricket
You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side thats been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out. When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!

Then i'd recommend going to the Tapers Section link that Cliff posted ealier.

Aha! THAT'S why it's popular in the third world! The political system here isn't nearly that clear, so it's a welcome break :-)

Thanks, Snori. I think I can figure it out now.

And thanks, folks, for bolstering my argument! Apparently the US Ambassador here even made some statement in which he said that cricket is gaining popularity in the States ... and yet, I now have the definitive proof that this is wrong. Hmmm, maybe I should tell him that a guy named Elbow said it's only watched in England, only Indians watch it around Some Dark Hollow, and someone called Boltman chirped at me.

Finster Baby, on the other hand, must have provided those same statistics to the Ambassador :-)

The price of beer concerns me more than both those other things; although, thinking about it I guess Gas prices as when they go up it impacts all the beer that needs Gas & Diesel to get to the beer store.
